Performers Essay

DJ KHALED

DJ Khaled, Originally known as Khaled Mohamed Khaled was born on November 26th 1975. He is an establishes DJ, Record Producer, Radio Personality and Record Label Executive. He has collaborated with a number of successful artists including Birdman, Drake and Nas

In the video i found of him performing, he used two turntables, a pioneer mixer and his laptop. his setup is mixed with both older and newer technology. I think this is because he stays within the style of hiphop which birthed DJing so he wants to stay close to the original way. DJ Khaled is uses his own ad-libs which he has chopped up and he uses these to hype up and interest with the crowd. He also effectively mixes tracks and Puts in quite a lot of scratching to make his performances more interesting and engaging. He also doesn't talk much but will sometimes have an MC at his performances swell to hype up the crowd even further by creating more energy.

DRAKE

born October 24, 1986, Aubrey Drake Graham AKA Drake, is a Canadian rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor.Drake released his debut studio album Thank Me Later in 2010, which debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 and was soon afterwards became certified platinum. His next two releases were 2011's Take Care and 2013's Nothing Was the Same, with certifications of quadruple and triple platinum. This also earn't him his first Grammy Award for Best Rap Album

Drake has a few different ways of performing to his crowd. Sometimes he will take moments in his performance to come with loads of energy and jump around the stage. He also does a lot of call and response. i also feel that the way the he orders his songs is very precise because he knows how to get the right reaction from the crowd. He also takes moments in between songs or during songs to talk to and have a conversation with the crowd. i feel that this technique is effective because it allows the crowd to feel as if they are part of the performance because he is fully talking to them. he also trys to make all of his music relate to all of his fans with this technique as well. I think i would employ the same technique as DJ khaled when he has the adlivs that he plays over his set this is just to help build up the atmosphere. I would also use scratching because the genre of music that i DJ is hiphop so the scratching would compliment it nicely because it derives from that genre. i also liked the way he created a loop but playing a little section of a track on one deck and switching the fader to the other track and playing that same section and going back and forth. that was a technique that came from some of the original DJ's such as DJ Kool-Herc so it was cool to see the same techniques still being employed in performances today.

critically cubed part 2

Although she was out of the limelight for a while, Kate Bush surprised everyone with her fifth studio album released in 1985 – “Hounds of Love”.

The Album starts off a classic; one of Bush’s most famous songs, “Running Up That  Hill”. this song was released as a single prior to the album.
The song surprised previous critics of hers,  especially coming up from a period where she seemed to drift away from music.  “Running Up That Hill”, as described by Bush herself, speaks of the possibility of a woman and man “trading places”.

which is described in the lyrics as “making a deal with God”. Bush was forced to change the title to “Running” after hearing of the possibility that it potentially wouldn’t be played in many countries. It was one of the highlights of this album, and remains as a key pinpoint in Bush’s success.

“Running Up That Hill” is followed by four other songs of a similar genre including The track “Hounds of Love”.  “Night of the Demon”, though continues to be one of art rock’s finest singles. Talking about the experience of falling in love, the single refers to the emotions which surfaced from being “chased” by the “hounds of love”.

The song, like the following two – “The Big Sky” and “Mother Stands for Comfort”, relies heavily on synths and early drum machines, sounding somewhat dated now but nonetheless moving.

Oscar-Zack, have you heard any of Kate bush's music from her album "Hounds Of Love"?

Zack-Yea, thats the album with the song "Running up that Hill on right"? i really enjoyed the use of her harmony sin that song i think it complimented her style because she was slightly eccentric.

Oscar- Oh really, my favourite track was Hound of love. i also liked how she split the album into two parts, One with the Pop Ballad sounding stuff and another for the weirder sounding tracks. i Think it was effective because it was more user friendly, but it also allowed her to show a contrast in her music very effectively

Zack-yea i agree oscar i feel like contrast is very important as an artist because it allows you're music to be more interesting. Also it allows you to go further in depth with you're music and you can do things like have alter ego's which is used modernly in todays music by artists such as Tyler the Creator.

Oscar- exactly it also allows you connect with you're audience more because you can build a deeper connection with them by showing them more sides to you and you're music.

critically cubed part 1

After reading the article from"pop matters.com" its clear too see that the writer talks about how Wonder's album progresses to a more funky yet balladry sound. This article relates to the “AustinChronicle.com" article as they both describe Stevie Wonder's album thoroughly. I prefer the"AustinChronicle.com" as it's more in depth. Although, I do agree with "pop matters.com" views of "Talking Book”.

I feel that they are true with their views about the change of sound to his album which is an important point. It was also quite interesting to read, due to the fact that it was a conversation with two writers, both stating their different opinions of Stevie's album. Both of these articles were written recently, "Pop Matter" in 2012 and "Austin Chronicle" in 2000.

The "Rollingstone.com" and "Newstates.com" article don't actually describe or discuss Stevie's album. For example, with "rolling stone.com" key information such as the year the album was released is missing.  The article only spoke about who produced it and how different it was to previous albums. but not how they feel about his music or wether they think it would be successful or not.

I wouldn't use this article to reflect how they feel about his music at all. "Newstates.com" speaks similarly to the "Rollingstone" article, however this one was also written in 2012 but it has a complete contrast to “Rollingstone”.  I didn't find this article engaging due to the fact that it fully talks about the instrument the clavinet and doesn't go into detail with Stevie Wonder's "Talking Book". "Newstates.com" focuses on Wonder's well known instrument the clavinet and how it was growing increasingly popular at the time of his album. They described this instrument as his 'second voice’.

Overall I would say that the pop matters article was my favourite. this is because they spoke about his music anyhow he was changing his sound as well. The second two articles are still good however i felt that their articles focus’s weren't where they should've been.

Context Essay

The 1980's was a period in which music began to progress further throughout society and pop culture. The variations of music genres being birthed out of the 80s varied, with pop and dance music amongst the most popular. Genres like smooth Jazz and Rock music were also becoming more dominant. Pop culture was taking the world by storm, networks such as MTV started to become super powers in television. 1981 was the debut for their first music video launch, it was by "The Buggles".

In 1982, Sony and Phillips released the new modernisation of the CD system.  Soon after that, the first CD was released onto the market. Billy Joel's "52nd street". The advanced movement to change to CDs left cassettes and vinyl on a downward trail of unpopularity. Fashion was also highly influenced in the 1980s.  important icons such as Madonna and David Bowie led the industry in and started lots of iconic trends such as baggy trousers and crimped hair.

Michael Jackson-

Michael’s music that was released during this decade was a major influence on 80’s music and style.
He has also had lots of different major global influences, from the moon walk in his performances to the gloves and jackets that he wore. It was during the 80’s that The Jackson Five started to separate and the performers started to focus on their solo careers. Michael Jackson decided to emerge with a bad boy persona that became notoriously popular.  especially throughout this decade. It can be seen in his album titled “Bad” which included songs such as “Bad” and “Smooth Criminal”

Run-DMC – The group that really brought hip-hop to the forefront was Run-DMC. Iconic Rhymes known for including humour such as
“Peter Piper,” “My Adidas” made it hip-hop more family friendly. They also took Michael Jackson and Prince’s foray into hard rock and applied it to hip-hop. Their huge smash hit “Walk This Way” with Aerosmith in 1986 paved the way for The Beastie Boys, Eminem, and the nu metal movement of the 1990s.

Michael Jackson has influenced my musical style because he is a pioneering artist. He was majorly involved in fusing genres in his music which is used more often now. producers such as Kanye west took influence from him. he used many techniques in his music from vocal harmonies to breaks. he was a very energetic performer as well, his audience loved seeing him do iconic dance moves such as the moonwalk or the gravity lean. i would also like to have this same level of energy when performing on stage to interact with my audience.

The 90's decade heavily inspired me because that was a time in which hip hop grew a lot more developed and a lot of iconic artists and concepts were created. Many famous acts who influence hip hop were birthed from this decade for example "A Tribe Called Quest", "Public Enemy", "Jay-Z". Some of the most infamous artists such as Biggie Smalls and Tupac where probably the most famous artists from this genre and influenced me as a producer and as an artist. they're music is still heavily sampled today. Biggie smalls' flow has definitely not only influenced me but a lot of other rappers as well.

Workshop Diary (Week 5+6)

We were given a list of a few different audio songs and we had to use the skills we've learnt over the past few weeks to change the audio and remix it into something else. I was given the song..........and I rearranged the order and created a four bar loop. I also changed the pitch added a filter and some reverb to create a more ambient effect throughout the song. This also allows the drum pattern to come in very clean and crisp because the sound will be much more abrupt rather than it being ambient and almost floaty. which creates a very nice contrast. We were also introduced to the flex tool and we were shown a variety of different ways to manipulate audio monophonically and polyphonically are just two examples.

In todays DJ lesson we continued with what we worked on previously. Added some more songs to our playlist, still trying to get our mixes as clean as possible. we exported the playlist onto an M3U file, and then exported the playlist onto each of our USB's

Composition Analysis's

My first track called "Komplications" took some inspiration from Massive Attack's -Teardrop. You can see that some inspiration is present in the drum pattern. For example I interpreted the way that they layer a lot of different sounds and carefully bring in other sounds to create different textures within the song such has ambient or a more rough and crispy texture. I also added some reverb and Delay which was present on the vocals of the track This allowed me to manipulate the song and add to the dark and intense theme of my track through creating spatiality within the track.  I used atmospheric dark sounding pads which were low frequency and thick sounding which also filled up the track quite a lot, but i also had some higher frequeny sounds and the cntrast allowed the higher frequency sounds to cut through th elowe frequency sounds. the Higher frequenciy sounds were quite twinkly to give ther listener an eerie feel as he listened to the track. Also because the track was very full, the sections in the song where some of the other instruemnts are taken out stand out a lot more creating an effective diminuendo

My second track took inspiration from James Brown and stevie wonder. I tried to create a very rythmic and syncopated atmosphere throughout this track. Like the James Brown song-Feel Good i tried to use a realistic sounding bass to give the overall track a more realistic funky feel. To do this i started with the bass line it was on a swing and was a sequence that was filled with lots of short plucked phrases but also some elongated ones to create a nice groove. I then took inspiration from the stevie wonder superstition track by using lots of different layered and syncopated sounds, i also used the clav synth intrument in my song like Stevie Wonder did in superstition for the main riff. i did this because the clav is a very distinctive sounding instrument and it is recognised notoriously in funk music. I also think that it contrasts and compliments the baseline because it cuts through it allowing the listener to distinctly hear and enjoy both sounds simultaneously. i also took inspiration from Stevie Wonder through using lots of harmonies to create a more thicker and complex sound in the instruments

Gig Review (External)

This Gig was the debut of Jack Garratt's new album, Phase. I missed the first warm up act, however i was able to watch the second act named.........which was a modern R&B act. I feel that it worked because it created an atmosphere which was laid back yet captivating. This also allowed the crowd to prepare for the headline act.

Both the warm up act and headline act were effective at engaging the audience. The warm up act was effective at engaging with the audience because he brought loads of energy to the performance. he would walk up and down the stage, take breaks in the song to perform dance solo's and perform riffs and over vocal techniques to make the performance more exciting. The headline act was able to successfully engage with the crowd swell but in a different way. For example after every few songs he would stop playing and interact and have a conversation with the crowd. asking what songs they would like to hear etc. also during his songs he would use call and response. One moment i remember in particular was during the song "The Love You're Given". In this song, there is a sample of an opera singer from the start, and the crowd sung this sample throughout the song. Then he would walk to one side of the stage and raise his arms in the air to get that section of the crowd to sing along. So for the beginning part of this performance he was interacting with the crowd which created a more personal atmosphere because it allows the audience members to feel as if they are part of the performance swell.

A standout moment of the performance was the introduction. There was a song being played with loads of energy, which was a great contrast from the warm up act which was a lot more relaxed. so when Jack came in straight away with this energy i was immediately captivated. The lighting and audio visuals were used extremely effectively well throughout the whole performance but in particular in this opening performance, there were loads of moving lights, fire, smoke, background lighting and there was also a ring that responded to the music as well. Jack was already playing the keys and drums and the FX pad at once whilst singing, showing off his amazing skill set. I thought this was a standout moment because i didn't know who Jack Garratt was before this gig and the fact that he introduced him self in this way let me know that the rest of the show was going to be just as amazing and energetic and electric as this moment was.

Overall i thoroughly enjoyed the show. i went in not knowing what i was going to expect and i came out of the performance extremely happy and i would go and watch him live again. i think as an artist one of the most important things is to let new people find and connect with you're music and thats exactly what happened with me. I have now added some of his songs to my playlist on my phone

Workshop Diary (Week Four)

In our DJ class this week looked at creating a group playlist. we learnt how to effectively categorise playlists in different ways, including Genre, Artists, Theme etc. this was helpful because we were making our own playlists and we were able to manipulate the atmosphere with the songs. for example playing a more or less energetic song. we also continued with our beat-matching and our cutting.

in our sequencing class this week we focused on making a whole song completely out of audio and no midi. This was fun because it was a very creative was that got us thinking. the human voice can imitate lots of different instruments from a synth to a bass and it is also great for making percussive sounds. not to mention putting effects like delay and reverb to create an ambient more effective vibe.

in our sequencing class last week, we were given a list of a few different audio songs and we had to use the skills we've learnt over the past few weeks to change the audio and remix it into something else. Decades Gig Review

This gig consisted of a couple of warm up performances and then a headline act. I thought that this structure was effective because it made the overall show have a more professional vibe, which provides a more enjoyable vibe for both the audience and the performers and also gives the performers more experience working in a professional environment.

Not all of the performers were successful in engaging the audience. the first warm up act which consisted of a duo of two girls was nice but i didn't really feel engaged. I think this was due to the way they were performing to the audience. they sat down and had closed body language, they didn't introduce themselves either, they just started singing. Now compared with the headline act, which was an afro beat band. They weren't really engaging at times i would see them look at the floor and it was a little bit uncomfortable at first. whereas the Afrobeats band had loads of energy, great energetic body language, call and response. But the best part was they even had a section where the band just free-styled the beat and audience members where encouraged to come onto the stage and dance. They also did covers of popular songs which encouraged the audience to sing along and become part of the performance. I also liked the use of the audio visuals used throughout giving the performance more depth.

A standout moment for me was when one of the warm up groups called ".........." performed a selection of, jazz/soul/R&B songs. i liked the way they used lots of instruments to form a band. consisting of bass, drums, E-piano,guitar, trumpet, trombone and a saxophone. during one of the songs they performed, there was an opportunity for the drummer, bass player and saxophone player to have solo's. This moment stood out to me because it was completely freestyle and it allowed me to fully engage in the performance and feel the music. The drummer had lots of different fills and rolls and changed the style of the drums but the saxophone player was my favourite. Not only is the saxophone one of my favourite instruments but the dramatic performance added that extra dimension. I remember one part specifically where he kept going up octaves and it looked as if he was going to run out of air, but he managed to complete the solo. This showmanship is what makes that my standout moment.

Overall I enjoyed the Gig, i enjoy the genre's of music that was performed and i also thought the atmosphere created was warm and welcoming yet realistic. which is why it was ideal. It also showed me what kind of things i would see in a professional environment for example, front of house engineer and audio visuals. It was slo good to see the standard of performers in the professional industry because it shows me where i need to get.

Workshop Diary (Week Three)

This week in our sequencing class we started to record our own audio. we were given microphones (WHAT MICS? HOW WERE THEY SET UP?) and we were to try and arrange a piece of recorded audio into one of our already composed pieces of work. I also used the pitch correction plug in on my audio to give the auto-tune effect.

In our DJing class we were still practising our beat matching, but we also looked at a new technique oh chopping up a beat and cutting it to create a new loop. we then used that new loop to bring in another beat. EXPLAIN THE LOOP IN MOER DETAIL
This technique is effective for mixing to songs that have very different bpm's it is used most effectively when you don't do it too often (WHY NOT TOO OFTEN) so you're timing of when to use this technique will get better as you practice more.

Technical Theatre

In todays lesson we started by looking at different colours and writing down what they make you think about. For example the colour Red is linked with passion. This task helped us with the rest of todays lesson because we looked at Justin Timberlake's song-Cant Stop The Feeling and we also had to plan how we would sequence lights and audio visuals and effects to the song. we were shown an example from last year which showed us the standard that we would have to sequence our lights to. it was also helpful as it demonstrated how we should highlight certain elements during the sequence for example a drum roll or trumpet solo. we then were put in to groups and listened to the song and then figured out what we would do and what timings we would do it. in our sequence we will be incorporating a lot of different skills learnt so far. for example using patterns on the moving lights and using the Gogo's. our display will also use a wide variety of different lights for example side lights, Fresnel's and spotlights.

Workshop Diary (Week Two)

This week we learn't how to fade audio in our sequencing class. this allowed us to chop up and rearrange audio without hearing any popping or cracking sounds which would lower the quality of the overall composition. We also learnt how to curve the fades so we could fully manipulate the fades in each of the midi regions.
ADD A SCREENSHOT TO ILLUSTRATE THIS SKILL

In DJ-ing we continued with our beat-matching and things are starting to become a lot easier and moe fluid which allows everyone to have a much more engaging performance. we also focused on waiting for bars in the tracks and the best times to come in so that the tracks could work together nicely. An example of this was in our mix of Rihanna's Needed Me and Drake's One Dance. In the audio section of Rihanna's song the chopped up part of Drake's song was mixed in and effectively created an energetic atmosphere
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO MIX IN THE BARS/PHRASES?

Workshop Diary (Week One)

This week, we were introduced to the skill of Beat-matching in our Dj class. we had a demonstration from Phill and we were then instructed to go into the production rooms to have a go ourselves. At first i found it hard because i found it tricky to decide where to put the Que's in the songs. because of this i then found it slightly harder to mix. However after some practice i was able to find better places to put the cues in and i stated to get the hang of things. i was able to successfully mix a couple tracks together, and now i can add those tracks to a list of tracks that i can mix nicely.

In our sequencing class we were introduced to using audio in logic, we had audio files on the server and our task was to make a track using the audio given to us and to also make the track tell instructions on what we were learning in the lesson as well. i found this lesson helpful because it gave me a better understanding of working with audio and also it helps me to read waveforms which also helps me in my DJ class because i can read it in the Traktor software which allows me to find a break or drop or vocal section in the track, allowing me to take advantage and manipulate my set accordingly

Moving lights

In todays lesson we looked at installing and programming moving lights, each moving light has 36 parameters. I was slightly familiar with this task because in our previous lesson we looked at programming profiles and Fresnel's. first we activated the moving light. the one I used was called a Mac Entour 700 using the Congo JR, my channel was 396 I was then informed how to effectively zoom, focus, pan, tilt and add colours and effects to the moving lights. I added a water effect with a magenta colour which rotated slowly

music performance review

the content of this performance consisted of a series of drama performances from the level 2 class and then some level 2 music performances and finally level 3 music performance.

i felt that some performers were successful in engaging the audience however others weren't. for example the first drama performances were definitely engaging because they had elements of things such as choral speaking and comedy which definitely engaged the audience. however there were other performances such as a music performance of Justin Bieber's All that matters. where it was clear that they were extremely nervous and then the drumming became off beat for the whole song. the singer forgot the words and after a while it was just awkward to watch.

techniques used by some of the performers to engage the audience were effective such as call and response. this is very effective because the performers are saying the lyrics directly to the audience making the performance a lot more personal to whoever is watching. another technique used to engage the audience were solo's for example in the Beat it performance the lead guitarist had a solo which gave him the opportunity to show his talents to us and it also hyped up the crowd a bit and definitely kept us engaged by captivating us in the music

A standout moment for me was the Beatles come together Cover. i partially enjoyed it because the drummer was exciting and new when to keep things simple and then when to are things a bit more complicated. I also enjoyed the use of a whole band, so a bass player, a guitarist, keyboard player, drummer and vocalists. i felt it was especially a standout moment because the band members were my peers and i hadn't seen many of them play instruments properly so it was great to see them in a professional environment.

My overall impression of the entire event was that i really enjoyed it and that i would also like to perform with my peers so we can showcase our talents and skills. the event had a good encouraging vibe as well and it also has encouraged everyone to collaborate with the people because we had a chance to see what could be achieved.

performing arts performance review

The performance consisted of lots of different performances. it started of with two singing performance's. the first group sang Don't Stop Believin' by Journey. which consisted of girls and boys. the second performance was an all girls singing group who sang American boy by Estelle. afterwards we saw a dance performance including dancers who chose the dance btec certificate option and then we saw a dance piece with just the dancers. finally we saw a collection of performances of some greek tales by the drama class.

I felt the performances were very engaging to the audience. one reason i believe this is because all of the performers were very confident and captivating. this encourages the audience to engage in the performance as it seems more real and believable which makes the overall experience a lot more fun. The lighting and sound also added another layer to the wow factor of the performance which also encourages the audience to engage because it creates a sense of reality throughout and makes each of the overall performances more effective and appealing.

an effective technique that stood out to me that helped engaged the audience took place when i was watching one of the drama performances. a scene was taking place on the stage and they called out for another character. The character then stood up from the audience and delivered her lines. this really impressed me because not only did it involve us as the audience in the performance, but it added another element of surprise to there performance as well. and because there were at least 6 other drama performances before the this happened. it was quite refreshing to see something like this because it does not happen a lot.

A standout moment in this performance for me was when the all girls group sang Estelle's song American boy. the performance included a piano and their vocals. The reason this performance stood out to me was because they used lots of technical aspects and it all worked. the harmonies were in tune, they were confident, they didn't sing too loud for the microphones. they even had parts of the song where some people sang one part and others sang another but it wasn't messy everything was on point. and the solo's were flawless.

overall i quite enjoyed the entire event. you could tell the performers enjoyed the event, and the environment was nice to showcase what ever all been working on over this time. it was also good to include the lighting and sound and technical side of the performance's because everything seemed more professional with that.

audience survey analysis

from the data provided to me from the audience survey. my target audience would be people who listen to hip hop music as it was the most popular genre surveyed as opposed to disco which was one of the least popular genre's surveyed. the majority of my target audience also often listen to music for about 2-5 hours a day and listen to it everywhere. the main way people search for new music is on youtube and the majority of my audience do not buy music either. however they do attend live music events every few months including club sets, festivals and live gigs. the main factor influencing them to attend a gig is wether their friends are or are not attending also.

Skills Audit

My musical skills are:
that i have some experience in singing which aids in when i try to find harmonies when composing music, also
i have a good ear and can pick tracks apart to locate certain features and instruments. i have quite an intermediate-advanced knowledge of how to effectively use logic Pro and i practice everyday which allows me to become better. in terms of creating music in other genre's i am not as comfortable in i feel that i can still produce some good compositions of music. i am happy to collaborate with other artists in order to create new concepts and take my music into different types of places, in order to define myself as an artist. i also play the piano and drums

My student skills:
i have good attendance, however my punctuality needs work. i will improve this by giving myself extra time to get to my lessons on time. i stay focused on my work and make sure that it is done however i could improve my work by including more references throughout. I'm also good at researching and analysing. i feel like these are my strongpoints, rather than reviewing

Tenika's musical skills:
she sings. she's very creative which allows her to write lots of lyrical content. she is also good at analysing song structures and components of music. her main area of improvement would be her amount of knowledge with using logic.

Tenika's student skills:
she is always punctual and has great attendance, despite the fact that she sometimes struggles with focusing in lessons she still manages to get her work completed. She is also very organised

Sade's Musical Skills:

Sade has good knowledge on using logic pro X and she has learnt classical piano up to grade 4 distinction level.

Sade's Student Skills:

Sade is good at participating during lessons and is also good at articulating her sentences carefully in order to deliver constructive criticism

She is a punctual person however her attendance needs improvement.

How were The Beatles innovitve

music video

Although early jazz artists created short music-film performances of their songs, and Elvis filmed unique settings of his songs that were parts of movies, the Beatles were the pioneers of marrying the two ideas into the concept we now know as the music video – a short, stand-alone film of a musical act presenting a current song that may or not be a live performance. The idea came to the Beatles as a way to ease their ridiculously tight schedule – instead of the band having to make tons of public appearances on TV shows around the world, they could send a video of themselves instead. The first dedicated music video was for the single “Paperback Writer/Rain” in 1966

Technical theatre lesson one

In todays lesson we learnt about the different types of lights such as fresnels, profiles, floods ETC. we focused more specifically on profiles. where we learnt how to safely and effectively rig them. first you hook the G-clamp onto the bar and then screw it tightly. then you use the safety hook/chain onto the bar as an extra safety procedure. afterwards you take the wire and wrap it over the bar so it is away from the heat to prevent any dangers. connect the plug to the plug socket. finally adjust the angle of the light and then the lens focus and shape.

Induction Task 1

A closer look into Abbey Road

John Lennon, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr. these four iconic artists formed a band as what we currently know to be the hugely successful Beatles. The Beatles have recorded and published many famous and classic albums which has influenced a lot of different styles and genre's of music which we listen today such as: Pop, Rock, HipHop and Soul. In this Blog I will be focusing on the notorious "Abbey Road" Released in 1969 it was their last recorded album. In particular i will be looking at the musical style, instrumentation, Lyrical content, Production techniques and Sound used throughout.

The first song i listened to on this album was "Come Together" immediately it creates a gritty yet powerful atmosphere. the musical style in this song is like soul meets rock and roll. i can hear influences of Elvis Presley, and definitely a lot of influence from the genre of the blues. the tone of the lead singers voices (John and Paul) compliments the genre of music and allows the listeners to fully understand the extent of the bands emotions. some of the instrumentation used in this track includes, a lead guitar, a bass, drum kit, keyboard and vocals. the bass compliments the drum kit in this song because it helps keep the song in tune and in rhythm.

This album has a lot of significant lyrical content throughout. one example of this takes place in the track "octopus's garden". this song was written and mainly sung by Ringo Starr. The song was written during a stage where The Beatles were going through a rocky stage and nearly disbanded. The song symbolises Ringo's feelings towards conflict within the band. In the key line "I'd like to be, under the sea", Ringo is showing his true feelings and is stating metaphorically that he'd rather be under the sea than where he was, in order to escape the conflict within a band. The subject of the song also includes and octopus because one time he ordered fish and chips and got squid instead, but he still enjoyed it. This song grew to be a classic because it is one of Ringo's only two songs that he has ever written and the colourful subject about living under the sea with an octopus gave a sense of euphoria to his listeners.

Abbey Road has a lot of significant production techniques. One of these is arrangement. In the song "Come Together". This song is different because the arrangement is not orthodox. it consists of segeuo which is used almost  to replace the chorus.  It is an instrumental break and it takes place after the one line chorus. This arrangement is effective because it adds to the overall atmosphere of the song.

To conclude i understand why this album is so successful and widely recognised. its a pioneer in the sense that it effectively fuses different types of genre's into one place and i can see why it made over 30 million pounds in sales
